Elsie Knocker, later the Baroness de T’Serclaes, opened a dressing station in Pervyse, just north of Ypres. She had an agreement with the Germans that allowed her to save men from airplane crashes as long as she didn’t touch the airplane. She was also one of the very few women allowed so close to the Front lines. Her memoir, Flanders and Other Fields, paints an exciting picture of a pioneering nurse.
